The sweeper and a row created as we completed the second fall hazelnut harvest. Each year the nuts drop from the trees in fall, usually beginning in the first weeks of October and ending late November.
The tractor, harvester, and nut cart. We first harvested October 10th-14th, then completed a second harvest on the 30th for the remaining nuts, delivering over 70,000 lbs of nuts this year.
At WillowSpring Farms extras from the farm are used on the farm. The last month to six weeks before butcher, the pasture-raised pigs are given the remaining hazelnuts, apples, and pears that did not get picked in time for harvest. These hazelnuts, apples, and pears make amazing pork!
The pigs at WillowSpring Farms have ample space to roam and root. This year they pastured in a fruit orchard and future vineyard that was grown over with blackberries. They are moved each year, managing the pastures for benefits to the land and the animals.
